The following summary of rules regarding hazards and red staked areas is not meant to be a full and complete discussion of the rules of golf. Instead, it is meant to be a brief explanation of rules as they often apply to our course. Golfers should know, and abide by the rules of golf.

The committee has positioned red stakes on the course with the intent to encourage safety, pace of play and ensure consistent application of the penalty rules. Red stakes indicate a hazard from which you have additional options for relief.

All holes with red stakes (1,3,4,5,6,7,8) include two red stakes with a white tip that define the beginning and end of the red stakes.

When a ball enters a red staked hazard their options include playing it where it lies; or if not found or unplayable, options include taking a two club length drop no closer to the hole from where the ball entered the hazard, incurring a one stroke penalty. This is an option that is often beneficial on our course.

There are many hazard areas on the course that are not red staked. For example, the woods to the left of 2 and the woods right and left on 9 are hazards that are not red staked, but there are many more. When a ball is hit into a hazard that is not red staked, including a hazard before or after the last red stake as identified by the white tip, you do not get the relief option mentioned earlier – that is, you cannot drop a ball within two club lengths of where it entered the hazard. Instead, if you find your ball you can play it where it lies or declare it unplayable; or if you do not find it within the 3 minutes allowed, you must return to the place where the ball was hit; re-hit; one stroke penalty. Typically,

to speed up play, golfers hit a provisional shot from the original location if a shot appears to go into the woods where there are not red stakes.
